Tips and Trips – Free up disk space issue

1. Purpose of document

Purpose of this document is to restrict VSS shadow copy space and free up disk space.

2. Scenario

There are several tools which gives you folder size (Ex : TreesizeFree.exe). Most of the time tools unable to provide you which folder is killing the Disk space. In this case check the shadow copy space used. If your system is being backed up via snapshot backup. Most of the time vss shadow copy limit was not set, and VSS shadow space keep increasing and kill your disk space.

3. View VSS shadow space used

Below is the example where C:  drive size is 100 GB. 63 GB used by VSS shadow which is killing the entire space, since vss shadow space is not set “UNBOUNDED”.

Open command prompt or PowerShell with elevated access and execute below command.

PS c:\> vssadmin list shadowstorage

4. Set VSS shadow space restriction

You can restrict the VSS shadow space by executing below command.

PS c:\> Vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=c: /for=c: /maxsize=40 GB

5. Conclusion

See the magic, You have plenty of free disk space on C drive now. Also VSS shadow space is now restricted which will not kill your entire disk space in future.

Recheck VSS shadow space.

PS c:\> vssadmin list shadowstorage
